What a grand way to finish the Royal Wedding week than last Friday's
T.S.O. concert in Hobart. Howard Shelly presented a diverse programme from early Elgar, to Shostakovitch and the world premier of Richard Meale's last composition Lumen. This work proved to be quite a surprise with what you would call symphonic fragments. The piece was very atmospheric and peaceful and at times I expected to hear distanced oriental temple bells. The performance had a distinct oriental feel. But the piece that really appealed to the very pro-British audience was Elgar's Enigma variations. Few works express more faithfully that Britishness so beloved by English people. A rousing encore greeted Pomp and Circumstance that had many of the audience in full throat and presented a distance echo of the Proms.
